"Support for the public university in Mexico
Autonomous Metropolitan University
"

PUBLIC LETTER

The undersigned, members of the national and international community of institutions of higher studies and scientific research, raise our voice to express

OUR CONCERN

For the events derived from the strike movement in the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), with headquarters in Mexico City and the State of Mexico.

We recognize that, like any strike, a trade union right is enforced, in this case, to achieve increases in their remunerations and to obtain posts that provide job security to university workers.

BUT NEVERTHELESS

After more than 60 days of strike, it is necessary to reflect and raise awareness of what is at stake: the professional education of thousands of young people and also the training of future scientists who are in the search of a better society. The generation and diffusion of the scientific, social, humanistic and technological knowledge of the colleagues of UAM, is currently at risk. We participate with this community in various projects of great importance, given their contributions and positive repercussions in multiple areas of national life and in other regions of the world. Their contributions are necessary, but today they are sadly paralyzed.

WE KNOW

What the academic community of UAM has achieved since its creation 45 years ago. We are sure that the federal authorities of the country equally value and protect it in its proper dimension. In the past this support to UAM has provided the resources supporting it in multiple ways to make it what it is today: one of the best public universities in Mexico. Given these circumstances, we express with this public letter, our

SOLIDARITY

With the scientific community that integrates the academic body of UAM

With its more than 58 thousand undergraduate and graduate students

With those that make it possible until today that UAM continues on the path of its institutional improvement as a public university in Mexico.

WE MAKE VOWS

For UAM to continue very soon its path as "House Open to Time", according to its motto of origin.

For our colleagues to continue without interruption their teaching, research and culture diffusion.

WE MAKE A CALL

To the actors of the conflict, especially the union, to act sensibly and without further delay, to resolve the conflict that afflicts the institution. Once the doors of the UAM are open, it will be possible to evaluate the appropriate options for its solution, within a framework of plurality and healthy debate of ideas.
